Fabrics can be categorized based on the fibres they are made from, their construction, and their intended use. Here are some of the main types of fabrics:


Natural Fibers

  • Cotton Soft, breathable, and comfortable. Commonly used for everyday clothing and home textiles
  • Linen Made from flax fibres, it is lightweight, breathable, and has a crisp texture. Often used for summer clothing
  • Wool Warm, resilient, and moisture-wicking. Used for sweaters, coats, and suits

Synthetic Fibers

  • Nylon MStrong, elastic, and abrasion resistant. Commonly used in activewear, hosiery, and outerwear
  • Acrylic Soft, lightweight, and warm. Often used as a wool substitute in sweaters and blankets
  • Spandex (Lycra) Highly elastic and stretchable. Used in activewear and garments requiring flexibility


Regenerated (Semi-Synthetic) Fibers

  • Rayon Made from cellulose, it drapes well and has a silky feel. Used in dresses, blouses, and home textiles
  • Lyocell (Tencel) Eco-friendly and breathable with good moisture management. Used in activewear and casual clothing
  • Bamboo Soft, breathable, and sustainable. Used in clothing and home textiles


Woven Fabrics

  • Plain Weave Simple over-under weave. Durable and versatile. Examples: cotton, linen
  • Twill Weave Diagonal rib pattern. Strong and durable. Examples: denim, gabardine
  • Satin Weave Smooth and glossy surface. Luxurious feel. Examples: satin, charmeuse


Knitted Fabrics

  • Weft Knit Stretchy and comfortable. Examples: jersey, rib knit
  • Warp Knit Less stretchy, more stable. Examples: tricot, lace


Apparel Fabrics

Used for making clothing. Examples: cotton, wool, silk.



Home Textiles

Used for household items. Examples: linen, upholstery fabric, curtains.



Activewear Fabrics

Designed for performance and comfort during physical activity. Examples: moisture-wicking polyester, spandex blends.

Each type of fabric has unique properties that make it suitable for specific applications, and the choice often depends on the desired characteristics like comfort, durability, stretch, and appearance.
